MakoSPaint Boards: February 2025!

Most streams, Mako will rant and scribble out the voices in her head into MS Paint.

Here is the MSPaint boards I could collect for January 2025 for your viewing pleasure.

Stats:

  • 18 MSPaint Boards
  • A lot more empty ones since I was sick at the start of the month with a throat infection!

Findings from Youtube Stream 20/2/25!

Stream Management ⚙️

A little wack, the stream manager window shows your views and stats and you can't really hide it like Twitch lets you (since live numbers can be distracting/tilting). I could zoom in a ton on the page to just try and hide the viewer numbers and stats, but not a great solution.

Also was scared of any music getting played nuking the channel - spotify has a bug where when it finishes a playlist such as the DMCA-free Streambeats, it will start randomly playing other similar vibe music that isn't even from the same artist. I even already had autoplay turned off, so I can't just set it and forget which made me a bit paranoid...

Internet Disconnects 🌐

Massive win for Youtube over Twitch for this! Telstra cut out my internet briefly (confirmed via BFD failures in modem log file) for a couple minutes, and the stream recovered, and chat was able to catch up with no delay. 99% of chat came back in quickly (views went from 150 -> 30 -> 60 -> 90 -> 120 -> 149 over the next few mins) so it didn't kick out most of the people like Twitch does!

Chat 💬

I think it's alright, but missed the twitch emotes. Standard youtube emotes just aren't the same, and future streams absolutely should setup 7tv or similar! The batched scrolling of chat is better than it used to be, but it desyncs between different windows so can get disorienting. Twitch's chat is overall much, much better still even with the improved scrolling youtube has now.

Moderation ⚔️

Had our first hate mail from what seemed to be kids angry at streamers not having a real job. They also liked dinosaurs and were underage, and said as much. Funny but couldn't see much in the way of how to fully ban - youtube instead has a "hide" feature for the messages which seems to act mostly as a ban?

The moderation tools seem very barebones and require more effort on the streamer/mod side. There isn't a thing like holding messages or ban evader detection like twitch has.

Numbers 🔢

Reached peak of stream CCV at ~184 about 1:03h in This hovered within ~10 people until ~4h, where I then booted up Shenzhen I/O and it declined to 125 over the next 4 hours of me being delirious trying to force the square peg in the circle hole. Overall, about 1/3 to 1/4 of the Twitch CCV which makes sense for an irregular stream schedule.

+4 Subscribers gained from the stream. Seems like discoverability really just doesn't exist for streams at all. There were plenty of people that were already subscribed from the videos coming in to say how happy they were to catch a stream though! There were a few mentions of Youtube pushing the stream to the top of their subscription feed. So it's good at converting subscribed video views into live views, but not organically live views from new viewers.

Watch hours seemed to be: 1.3K! This is massively helpful for increasing the watch hour requirement for monetisation, a few more streams and that'd be that fulfilled.

Overall, neat try! Thank you for the support! We'll probably do another one next week

VOD

The VOD is easy to go through, and will always have the chat replay there instead of expiring after 60 days like Twitch would, so win for YT there.

The vod is also actually getting reccomended and watched after the stream is finished compared to Twitch, with about 90 views 9 hours after stream ends, and adding 187 watch hours on top! Pretty decent for a small YT channel and a livestream VOD.

Why I'm starting Patreon/FW

Platforms die. So I'm starting a Patreon/Membership on FW

A bit dramatic, yes -- but bear with me.

I usually stream on Twitch and it's how I have fun, its the main way even. Since starting it and going on 3 years (!!) of streaming there's been some major changes to my life. I've quit working multiple jobs that treated me pretty poorly, and successfully switched into doing this basically fulltime.

The main change is, somehow, finding a lot of people that enjoy what I do. This is insane to me. Each and every one of you that watch my streams sticks around to hear me rant about random junk while being semi-delirious.

If unconditional support wasn't enough, I've been lucky enough to get to know other wonderful vtubers and learn a lot from them. One of the harshest things I've learnt from exposure to my peers is:

Platforms die.

Maybe not the entire platform all at once, maybe just an account that is that person's platform. But platforms die.

Maybe not all at once, but sometimes a creator’s platform disappears overnight. Accounts get banned—sometimes for valid reasons, often not. Twitch, for instance, regularly issues week-long bans to VTubers.

Sure, a banned account can be unbanned, but how long does that take?

There’s a cultural perception around anime avatars and a lack of understanding about what VTubing really is. Large platforms have no incentive to care about the weird niche that potentially freaks out advertisers, and Twitch shows this all the time in their PR by getting names and accounts wrong even in award shows they themselves supported.

Just this month, I’ve seen bans that seem absurd:

  • A VTuber (MOTHERv3) banned for “fraud.”

  • Channels like Cottaintail and Ebi banned for “sexual content.”

  • A creator banned for impersonating… themselves.

  • A clipper’s channel deleted without appeal.

This is how platforms die.

I have no explicit loyalty to any one platform and I don't think anyone really should. A large company doesn't have an incentive to care about you because there'll always be more people ready to take your place. If you are perceived (even wrongly) to get in the way of ad revenue your head will roll.

But there are people who have loyalty to creators (and somehow to me), and that extends beyond just where they happen to stream or upload to. Any kind of creator on the internet only exists because of the fans that support them.

In my worrywort nature I've been branching out to other platforms for both added exposure to the Twitch stream, and to diversify so that anything happening to the stream doesn't knock me out entirely. Part of this involves:

  • paying editors

  • extra time spent recording videos and editing myself

  • organising merchandise

  • paying for hardware (3D so expensive...)

  • paying for digital assets

This Membership thing is my way of building a safety net—a rainy-day fund to help me keep doing what I love, no matter what happens on Twitch or YouTube.

Why Fourthwall?

Well they've delivered the merch on time, they've paid me on time, and they seem to offer more reasonable rates than Patreon. Added benefit is I can give direct discounts on merch here to certain member tiers!

There’s no urgent need for you to give. I’m not going anywhere (hopefully!). But knowing there’s a consistent level of support outside of these platforms would mean the world to me and ease some of my worries about the future. So,

If you want to support the stream, please consider the FW Membership.

Thank you for all that you do for me, I will try my best to do the same for you <3

this was a big ramble but thanks for sticking to the end :>
